Mayor Bloomberg’s Doomsday Budget
Mayor Bloomberg outlined the Fiscal Year 2010 Budget on January 30, 2009. Included in the budget, is a proposal to reduce the number of jobs in the Department of Education by 14,190 of which 13,930 will be layoffs and 260 by attrition. This is unacceptable,since our schools are underfunded, the classrooms are still over-crowded, our teachers overwhelmed and our children are still not learning at the level that is necessary to compete globally. President Obama has outlined in the stimulus package $150 billion for education. The New York School system is the largest in the country, therefore we have to make sure that our Federal elected officials fight to bring home New York’s fair share.
